Exam 2 Question Set Uber Case Study You are welcome to utilize all sources of information available to you to answer the questions with the exception of collaborating with your class peers to complete the assignment. Please take the amount of time you need until the due date of submission (April 7 NOON) to thoroughly address the questions asked. Some of the replies in the prior exam from some individuals were a little “skimpy” on the detail and discussion. Since you have 30 hours for this activity, I’m expecting a more detailed analysis! Question 1 : In using your leadership consultancy (observation and research) skills that you have been developing I want you to thoroughly review the CEO of Uber (Travis Kalanick) by understanding and detailing the following: This link will help get you started: A. What was Kalanick’s personal background prior to becoming CEO of Uber B. Describe Kalanick’s educational background C. Describe Kalanick’s professional employment background (both where he worked and where he started his own companies). D. Based upon the concepts placed within the textbook regarding leaders who are Once Born and Twice Born , in which category would you classify Kalanick and clearly explain your position as to why you feel that would be an appropriate designation. Kalanick was a born in Los Angeles, California in 1976, He graduated from Granada Hills High School and went on to attend UCLA to study computer engineering. His mother worked in retail and his father was a civil engineer. Kalanick dropped out of college in 1998 and helped Dan Rodrigues and founded Scour Inc. Scour Inc. was a search engine and dealt with file sharing. In 2000, Scour filed for bankruptcy after being sued for copyright infringement. In 2001, he founded Red Swoosh with Michael Todd. Red Swoosh also dealt with file sharing. It was later bought for $19 million by Akamai Technologies in 2007. In 2009, this is when Uber came about with Garrett Camp. Today it is one of the most well-known mobile apps used, generating $10 billion in revenue. I think that Kalanick is a twice born leader. As said in the book, twice born leaders “…suffer as they grow up”. He dealt with 3 years without salary, owing back taxes, moving back into his parent’s home which basically shaped him to where he is today.
