Nat Turner Slave Narrative Project Group Four: Lekia Carson, Drea Bates
Early Life On October 2, 1800 Nat Turner was born into slavery in Southampton County, Virginia. Nat’s parents are lost to history, his mother was named Nancy and there is no knowledge about his father. When Nat was a child he was said to be special because of his talent to be about to describe things that happened before he was born that someone like Nat would have never even known about.
Preacher Life Nat became a preacher who said he was chosen by God to lead slaves from bondage. On August 21, 1831 Nat led a violent insurrection which after led him into six weeks of hiding before he was found and caught to be hanged. Nat Turners violent insurrection incident led to the emancipation movement in the region which later led to harsher laws made against slaves.
Heaven Sent “I heard a loud noise in the heavens, and the Spirit was loosened, and Christ had laid down the yoke he had borne for the sins of men, and that I should take it on and fight against the Serpent, for the time was fast approaching when the first should be last and the last should be first.” -Nat Turner
Plantation Life During Nat’s life time he worked on many plantations. Benjamin Turner, the Virginian plantation owner, his first owner allowed him to be able to learn about reading, writing, and religion. Nat Turner became very religious and dedicated himself to reading the bible, praying and fasting. After Benjamin Turner he began working for Samuel Turner, and he ran away from his plantation and after thirty days in the woods Turner returned because he said he have received a sign from God.
