“Homophobia as a Weapon of Sexism” by Suzanne Pharr - Gender roles, primarily those reinforced by patriarchy, continue through economic inequality, possible actions of violence, and society’s disapproval of homosexuality - Economic o The United States consists of an economic pyramid, in which rich, White males are at the top, and everyone else falls into place on the lower levels, those of which primarily being made up of women and minorities o Women and minorities are given less opportunities for education and occupation, thus are forced to become cheap workers for the White males - Violence o Males have a sense of superiority to women because society allows the men to have power over them o The possible threats towards women – rape, thefts, etc – do not allow them to be outside the protection of society - Homophobia o By calling a male a “homosexual,” one is making that man less of a man because he is not fulfilling the gender role of what a male should be, and that is straight o
