The end of World War II has led to an increased consumer culture 20 th century also witnessed the beginnings of a national obsession with sport at the collegiate level 1950’s, the idea of physical labor carried a negative class connotation – if you were working with your hands, you were not advancing the American Dream The invention of the birth control pill led to the notion of women seeking out men not for their financial stability, but for their ability to satisfy their needs The embarrassment over national fiascoes like the Vietnam War and the Iran hostage crisis, coupled with the shrinking role of men as sole provider in the average household, meant society began to look increasingly in directions other than economics and politics for signifiers of masculinity
