Reading Questions Week Two Ian Hacking “Making Up People” 1) What does it mean to make people up? “New slots were created in which to fit and enumerate people…Social change creates new categories of people…It elaborately, often philanthropically creates new ways for people to be. People spontaneously come to fit their categories” (31). 2) What are the differences between a nominalist and a realist? a. Nominalist – Humans create the categories in which everything falls into place. b. Realist – Categories naturally exist, and it separates on its own. 3) What is dynamic nominalism and how is it different from static nominalism? a. Dynamic nominalism - The categories are not static. So, although people may be classified as one thing, the definition of that classification can change over time. b. Static nominalism – Think “that all categories, classes, and taxonomies are given by human beings rather than by nature and that these categories are essentially fixed throughout the several eras of humankind” (34).
