POS 2041 (MWF 2:30-3:20) Alison Healy Portfolio Assignment #3 October 8, 2007 Mandated Equality? 1. Affirmative action gives extra consideration to minorities who have been challenged in the past. This policy is majorly used in employment and admission to universities to provide equality to minorities who have been historically discriminated against. For example, according to the text, the state troopers in Alabama had never hired a black person. Affirmative action required them to hire one new black employee for every new while employee until a quota of 25 percent black employees was attained. This is an example of affirmative action in the works. 2. However, affirmative action is not perfect. It has been suggested that affirmative action does not always work for every black person. According to the text, many were brought up in poverty and lack the necessary and proper education and job skills required to vie for existing jobs.
