Unsettled chapter 2 summary ‘housed in the hyperghetto’
Ra and Heng leave Manila and arrive in America at the LAX airport. Ra accepts the housing arrangement
provided for her and her family. The family is then flown to the Bronx and placed in an apartment with a
broken heating and water system, missing windows, and defective outlets. This “home”, located in the
poorest of the urban poor, was not only uncomfortable but was filled with safety hazards. The family
spent New York winter nights with only their donated coats and frosty air flowing though the broken
windows into the apartment. Eventually an electrical fire starts in their home and they lose the few
possessions they had. Chapter 2 emphasizes the fact that Ra and her family were not rescued by being
sent to America like the general belief held by Americans at that time, but rather she was shipped from
one war zone to another.
