Shakespeare In Love In Shakespeare In Love, Shakespeare is portrayed as a young playwright who can’t seems to be having a bit of writers block. He is desperately trying to finish his latest play “The Pirate’s Daughter” which is later changed to “Romeo and Juliet”. Shakespeare is constantly being hassled by the owner of the Rose who needs the money so he can pay off his debt. Shakespeare holds a casting for his new play and cannot find anybody to play the lead role. Just when he gives up all hope he meets Thomas Kent who auditions after everybody has left. Thomas Kent is really Viola De Lesseps. Viola is from a wealthy aristocrat family. Though she wants to be an actress, since theatre means so much to her, it is against the law for her to do so, which explains why she went in disguise as Thomas Kent. She gets the lead role of Romeo. Viola then finds out her father has arranged for her to marry Lord Wessex. Lord Wessex is from a family of royal decent but does not have a large fortune of his own. Shakespeare and Viola fall in love and he is inspired by her to finish the play “Romeo
