COURSE DESCRIPTION: Communication pervades life, but communication scholars hold widely divergent views as to what communication is and how it is to be studied. This course is designed to introduce students to the communication process and the functions of communication in its various contexts. Emphasis will be on communication theory, practice, and research. REQUIRED TEXTS: John W. Gareis and Ellen R. Cohn, (2007). Communication as Culture: An Introduction to the Communication Process , Dubuque, IA: Kendall Hunt. John Bourhis, et al, (2006). Style Manual for Communication Studies, 2 nd Ed. New York: McGraw-Hill. ASSIGNMENTS AND EVALUATION: Evaluation is based on attendance, participation in recitation discussions and activities, and the satisfactory completion of all quizzes and assignments. Assignments include: 1. The completion of assigned readings in preparation for class and recitation discussions. 2. Three quizzes 3. A written project 4. Brief recitation assignments. The final grade will be computed as follows:
