Anth 151 Final Essay Answers Brian Otake 5/6/07 1) When talking about the rise and collapse of civilizations, first agricultural production increases, then success of an emerging bureaucracy, and trade network expansion. The Maya civilization prospered greatly in the Mesoamerican lowlands in this way. Then people begin to think that the social complexity does not work anymore--trend of decentralization emerges; the civilization suddenly becomes smaller, simpler, and much more egalitarian. Population density fall, trade diminishes, and information flow decreases. Or it can collapse by a defeat from a powerful civilization. There is loss of complexity when civilization becomes collapsed; as most of the Near East civilization experienced. The Minoans were similar in the way that they had surplus food production, extensive trading, but they differed in the social organization. They didn’t have any supreme rulers or divine kings as the Near East civilizations. They didn’t create any temples nor did they live in cities. Next, the reason for collapse was greatly different.
