Homework: 1. Read and annotate “Finding a Place to Stand: Writing, Reading, and Researching in a Globalized World” by Anne Fitzsimmons and Margaret Himley (posted on our Blackboard page, under “Readings”). 2. Then follow the link (also posted under “Readings”) to “William McDonough on the Wisdom of Designing Cradle to Cradle” (available @ <http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/william_mcdonough_on_cradle_to_cradle_design. html>) and watch the 20-minute video. Bring the essay and your copy of Cradle to Cradle ( CtC ) to class on Wednesday. Wed, 8/27 In class, we’ll discuss what it means to have a “critical encounter” with a text, and I’ll introduce the unit 1 essay assignment. We’ll also discuss the critical practices of claim- identification and summary. Homework: 1. Read pp. 96-97 (“Summary”) in Writing Analytically ( WA ). 2. Write a two-paragraph summary of McDonough and Braungart’s main ideas or arguments.
