Chapter 3: the chemistry of Climate Change 1. The surface temperatures of both Venus and Earth are warmer than would be expected on the basis of their respective distances from the Sun. Explain. These two planets are warmer than would be expected because they have atmospheric gases that pro- duce a greenhouse effect.The sunlight enters the atmosphere of both Earth and Venus, which warms the surfaces of the planet.The atmospheric gases are able to trap some of the heat radiated by the planet surfaces.
