- 3 - BUS488 – STRATEGY January 2017 Semester Teaching Note to Students The purpose of this Teaching Note is to guide you on the approach to analysing cases. It should be read together with each weekend’s Discussion Points. A different set of Discussion Points will be uploaded onto Canvas > BUS488_L01 for each case analysis which you have to complete, prior to each weekend’s classes. The Discussion Points contain key points that you should consider when applying each set of concepts to the case facts. The Teaching Note and the Discussion Points are intended to provide a structure to clarify and facilitate your analysis of cases. NOTE: Please read this Teaching Note (including its Appendices) carefully as you (i) prepare your case notes for submission to your tutor, prior to each weekend’s classes, and (ii) develop your analysis for your TMAs, GBA and the examination. 1. Background Research (a) You are permitted to conduct background research on the case. This is especially important if you are unfamiliar with a particular industry in the case and/or feel a need to increase your general knowledge of the business environment. However, it is usual for the case writers to include key facts and data in the case. Hence, your case analysis should focus on these key facts and data, and should not be based primarily on information from external research. You are advised against carrying out exhaustive external research as it may result in an off-tangent or mistaken analysis. (b) It is important to evaluate the sources for external research. Sources should be credible and well- validated. As an example, blog entries and online forums are not appropriate sources as these are based on personal opinions, may contain factual errors and are not validated. 2. Industry You should identify the specific industry in which the Company operates. This will help you to focus on the appropriate business(es) of the Company to be analysed, so that your case analysis is not too broad. For example: In some cases, for highly diversified companies, there will be multiple unrelated industries (e.g. the Samsung Group which is in property, financial institutions, consumer goods etc) which are not the focus of the case.

- 4 - Other cases may only focus on certain segments of an industry. For example, Porsche operates in the sports car segment of the broader automobile industry.
