New norms about individual rights, obligation of governments to provide for citizens (UN declaration of human rights) Bretton Woods Institutions – mgmt of the economy - New Hampshire 1944 - U.S. Goals o Eliminate trade blocs o Principle of non-discrimination o Laissez-faire regime (countries couldn’t meddle in their economies) - UK goals o Government MUST interfere o Preferences for its empire (maintain free trade with colonies) - Compromise: o Non-discriminatory trade o Gold standard, but governments could intervene
