T&L-2-4 Minerals Chapter 2 Minerals The Building Blocks of Rocks A mineral is a naturally occuring inorganic solid that possesses an orderly crystalline structure and a defnite chemical composition which gives it a unique set oF physical properties. It is homogeneous , usually having a defnite chemical composition and a characteristic crystal structure . 1. Naturally occuring 2. Inorganic (never alive) 3. The same throughout 4. Usually a chemical compound or a pure element, but sometimes a defnite mixture 5. Some compounds or elements have several crystal Forms. Graphite and diamond are both Carbon, but with a di±erent crystal structure.
