SNR Discussion Focus Questions: Catch-22 1. Exposition and Other Mechanics A. Title Catch-22 is a paradox where a person cannot accomplish a goal because of contradictory rules. For example: A needs B, but B needs A. The term was coined by Joseph Heller to describe the loopholes in the military system. The title may have been chosen because in the paradoxical situation, there was a “catch”. B. Opening chapter/first few pages: The introduction of the novel is a catch-22; Yossarian is too sick to go into combat but not sick enough for him to have a “real” fever. A humorous account is then told: Yossarian is in charge of censoring soldiers’ letters, but does not take this job seriously so he mindlessly censors out words and signs it under a false name. True realities are shown when “The Soldier in White” is revealed, however Yossarian and Dunbar continue to make jokes. Problems arise for Yossarian when an investigative policeman comes to figure out who scrambled the letters.
