October 3, 2007 1) World’s population- natural population growth (births-deaths) a) Doubling rate- time it takes a given population to double in size b) Census- population count i) World population at time of Christ- 250 million ii) 1650- 500 million iii) 1820- 1 billion iv) 1930- 2 billion v) 1975- 4 billion vi) 2010-8 billion c) Reason the doubling time is reduced is exponential growth i) Grow on the original number plus previous increases d) Crude birth rate and crude death rate (CBR and CDR)- total births and total deaths e) Population pyramids- divide a country population by age and sex i) Undeveloped country- shaped like a triangle ii) Developed country- shaped like a rectangle f) Baby boomers- people who were born between 1946 and 1960(+) i) Good economy ii) Soldiers came home g) Dependency ratio- ratio to those too young or old to work to those of working age h) Baby boomlet- slight increase in population because of the baby boomer’s kids
