Announcements 8/27/08 There are no labs next Monday due to the holiday. Tuesday lab "office hours" will start at 8:00 a.m. and run until 8 p.m. If you have to make up activity 1, or need help on the first big homework, due Wednesday, you can come any time during these hours. SI starts next week. Office hours for SI will also start next week, and are included in the UPI “Office hours” link. All other office hours start this week.

3.1 From reality to model We first will define… position, displacement, velocity, and acceleration. Then using these concepts… We study the motion of objects traveling in one dimension with a constant acceleration. Our everyday experience tells us that motion represents a continuous change in the position of an object. 31

We will see as we move forward through the book that motion can be categorized into three types: Translational (car moving down the highway) Rotational (Earth rotating on its axis) Vibrational (back and forth movement of a pendulum) For now, we concern ourselves with translational motion. 32
