Bechard What makes up an American? It’s not the culture or the language? Americans are the melting pot of world cultures. The American population speaks a variety of languages, although English is considered the common language. There are only two common entities all Americans posses; American rights and equality. America was formed on the core assertions of freedom; freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and freedom to bear arms. Even a free country has to work for freedom from racial prejudices, freedom from segregation, and freedom from inequalities. How does America, with its diverse ethnicity, seem to function without turmoil or civil fighting? As Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. states in The Cult of Ethnicity (1991), “Ethnic and racial conflict—far more than ideological conflict—is the explosive problem of our times” (Schlesinger 143). He goes on to say, “…ethnicity is breaking up nations” (143). He has stated a false analogy. It may be correct to say, nations like Yugoslavia, India, or the Soviet Union have civil crisis because of the countries diverse ethnicity. But, there could be so many other reasons why the country is experiencing turmoil or civil war. The difference in religion, poverty caused by corrupt government, or a wide array of other reasons could be why a country is experiencing civil problems. There are other supporting facts which suggest other reasons why countries are being separated. Schlesinger later states that the cult of ethnicity has unhealthy consequences. He also believes the conception that the United States as a nation is composed not of individuals making their own choices but of inviolable ethnic and racial groups. He’s saying that the “cult of ethnicity” makes the U.S. focus more on the rights of ethnic groups’ not individual rights. He’s trying to say that the American identity is in trouble 2
