But with the advent of composite materials and new lamination processes, hardwoods are now competing in the same markets with conifers for construction materials. Pulp and paper technology has also adapted well to the incorporation of greater proportions of hardwood pulp. Addition- ally, with the consistently high demand for quality hardwood sawtimber and veneer, an economic picture emerges that indicates a strong future role for central hardwoods in the American forest economy. An added facet is the location of the central hardwood region with the large urban population centers of the East, South, Midwest, and Great Lakes forming a virtual ring around its exterior. This has the effect of placing demands on the resource for tourism, aesthetics, and wildlife that have a direct impact on forest resource management. The central hardwoods also represent a very complex mixture of species and sites. Although the traditional silvicultural treatments generally apply to hard- woods, the mixed stands of the central hardwood region pose some interesting and unique challenges and opportunities for foresters. There already exists a large body of knowledge relating to the culture of central hardwood forests, but this information is dispersed in numerous papers, reports, and books. Through this book I hope to bring this information together in a cohesive unit. In summary, the central hardwood forest is a unique and significant resource that is approaching several thresholds simultaneously. The maturing central hardwood forest has tremendous value and diversity. Such value and versatility can lead to exploitation, but at the same time they can provide economic incentives to achieve the goal of sound forest management. My hope is that this book will be instrumental in achieving the latter. Morgantown, West Virginia Ray R. Hicks, Jr. April 1998 ...
