Washington was known for his remarkable struggles of starting out life as a slave and transforming into a remarkable speaker, educator, black leader, and successor of Frederick Douglass . Washington is also sometimes criticized on his mild acceptance of segregation and not wanting to cause friction due to the fact that he grow up in Virginia with strict Jim Crow laws . Washington was a strong black man who wanted to make positive changes for the black community with such achievements as his building of the Tuskegee Institute . Booker T .
