Kim Yoo kyong Kim Professor Mattoon Writing 1 16 September 2015 Summary of “ A Hanging” and “ Shooting an Elephant” The essay “ A Hanging ” in LIT.FOR COMPOSITION was written by George Orwell, an essayist. “ A Hanging ” describes the execution of a Hindu prisoner at the hands of the British Raj. George Orwell begins this story with description the day as being "a sodden morning of the rains ”(Orwell. 66) and jail in Burma. Orwell continues with gloomy descriptions of the atmosphere in the first paragraph. This creates a sad mood for the rest of the story. In this essay, he tells readers his thoughts about capital punishment carefully by using an example of an execution of a prisoner through this essay. In this story, there is one prisoner who is a Hindu, and Orwell portrays him as a conscious man, because he is still capable of understanding obstacles of his ways to the place of execution, despite the fact that he is going to die soon.
