2 ECE/CS 314 Performance • Real world stuff – Assessing performance is very complex – Some will say “performance is dead” (what do they think matters instead?) • Performance comes down application/machine bottlenecks – Compute bound? – Communication bound? – Memory bound? ECE/CS 314 Performance is NOT Dead • Running efficiently and quickly is always important • Government, large enterprises most interested in HPC • Gamers expect high performance, among other things • Even embedded systems need to perform well ECE/CS 314 We’ll Focus on One Aspect • Keep it simple: ISA design • Give you the flavor of Performance Analysis • Follow straightforward formulas It’s really more fun than this!
