Audiology Exam 1 Review Notes - sound transmission system includes: o sound source o sound medium o sound receiver - pure tone audiometry- defined as the process of measuring a person’s pure tone ac and bc thresholds using an audiometer - ACT symbols- right ear= O or triangle, left ear= x or square - BCT symbols- right ear= <, [ left ear= > ] - Aurus dextra- right ear AD - Auris sinistra- left ear, AS - Auris uterque, meaning each or both ears AU - Conductive hearing loss o Occurs when a person has a disorder in the OE and ME but IE is normal o Abnormal ACT’s but normal BCT’s with significant ABGs - sensorineural hearing loss o occurs when a person has a normal OE and ME but has a disorder in the IE o defined as abnormal ACTs and equally abnormal BCTs with no ABG - mixed hearing loss o occurs when a patient has an OE and or ME plus IE disorder o defined as abnormal BCTs but more abnormal ACTS with significant ABGs - 3 frequency pure tone average- 500, 1000, 2000 HZ o Formula= add all three divide by 3 - normal -10 – 25 - mild 25-40 - moderate 40-55 - moderately-severe 55-70 - severe 70-90 - profound 90+ - rinne tuning fork test- compares AC to BC - bing tuning fork test- occlusion effect- done by holding the stem of the tuning
