Discussion Notes November 14 Romanesque Portals and the Pointed Arch Cluny * cluny is where we see the first incidences of the pointed arch * not much of cluny exists today-- lots of ruins * for a mid to late 11 th century building, cluny is very tall * groin vault in the aisles * arched windows Pape Le Moneal Church * affiliated w/ cluny * similar architectural features * covered narthex * interior of church has been plastered over and painted * the area w/in the columns (aisles) is the hemistory, and the ambulatory is behind it West Side Relief, South Portal (St Pierre, Moissac, France, c. 1120) * what’s being represented on this west side relief? lust, potentially avarice/greed * what’s happening in the upper right picture-- the death of a wealthy man who was selfish and is being dragged down to hell by demons * up on top-- called larazus and devus (latin for well?)-- the leper lazarusis being held on abraham’s bosom = during this period this is viewed as ultimate paradise
