Discussion Notes October 31 Carolingian and Ottonian Art * the Apocalypse 4 and Rev 4 are the same. Just that Rev is in the protestant Bible / king james vers, etc, and the Apocalypse is in the catholic Bible * the apocrypha is the extra books (eg; Daniel 14) Corvey-sur Weser, 873 * looking at the westworks * towers * bottom floor so people standing there could not look directly up at the emperor * monks, “angel” choir would be upstairs?? * Corvey is still a carolingian structure Gernrode * monastery which was originally a nunnery later taken over by monks * founded in 961 (in Stalley reading) * eastern transept * square choir * eastern apse * area right before the apse is called the choir-- where the monks “staked out their area” no one else allowed in there? * crypt underneath * crypt-- people wanted to be buried there b/c to be close to relics and close to apse * gallery is a fairly new characteristic in the north / west?? * gallery: second story, there’s a floor that extends over the entire side aisles
