David HodgeENT-435Professor Rendon01/20/2017Innovation Architecture: Developmental Systems Among Leading Global CorporationsInnovation is a key necessity in the development of products and the growth of a business, however it involves more than just a new idea, product, service, or method. The leadingcorporations across the globe have had to develop systems to create a culture of innovation, which these systems are actually innovations in of themselves, and to keep this culture growing and adapting to the ever changing world. These systems and practices have helped several major corporations, like: P&G, Apple, and Whirlpool, become three of the world’s leaders in innovativepractices. In each of these organization’s innovation system, there are processes and systems that work to support that innovation, enable the corporation to capitalize on intrapreneurship and innovation, and help to prevent issues that may prohibit or stifle innovation and intrapreneurship.Proctor & Gamble, one major company on the leading edge of innovation, had a somewhat different approach to induce more innovation and intrapreneurship than Apple and Google. Their chairman, Alan Lafley, is on the hook to produce several billion dollars of new revenue each year. That is rather extreme motivation for a chairman to do what is needed for the growth of the business and more importantly, job security! What Alan did was break down all thebarriers between all divisions to allow innovation to flow freely throughout the entire organization. He opened the doors to channel innovation from outside the organization from innovators not on the payroll. Alan’s goal was to source at least 50% of its innovations from
outside Proctor & Gamble. Due to the new model, Connect & Develop, P&G has been able to bring hundreds of new products to the market that originated outside of the organization (Skarzynski& Gibson,2008).The mobile phone industry, for quite a while, was basically a joint handset device and telecommunications service industry, however it has now transformed into what is now a more global digital ecosystem development. Take for instance, Apple. The iPhone is not just a phone, it was designed to act as a personal game device, an e-book reader, a navigational system, and even run diagnostics on the individual user’s medical issues and these are just a few of the many uses the iPhone offers. However, only a few of these applications were designed by Apple. It wasa concerted effort on the part of independent developers to create many of these applications that
