MMW 1 10/01/07 Monday, Week One I. “Business” + quick “timeline” review -Models: compare with modern people as an analogy -Ethnography – a study of a particular people, particular society, typically looks at natural resources, system, politics, religion, male/female relations, technology, etc. mostly done by an anthropologist who goes to live among the people, can go from a month to years. -First is BaMbuti -Gives us a look at what it’s like as societies move through the chronological sequence II. Intro to evolution and reconstructing the past -In order to reconstruct what happened millions of years ago a lot of different sciences are involved – geology, physics, chemistry, biochem, etc. We call it paleoanthropology (paleo – old, anthropost – humans, -ology – study of) III.Man’s place in nature -Kinds of stories are origin stories that seek to explain where we came from -98, 99% of our DNA is identical to chimpanzees -non-human animals have used tools and communication systems -animals have their own politics IV. How do bio forms change over time?
