VIS 21A 10/11/07 Thursday, Week Two North America Inuit (Eskimo) – Arctic -Not exactly American Indians – distinctly different -arrived in the new world late -rich and complex spiritual beliefs -relationship with the natural world depends on how they treat the world -respects animals they rely on -Art known for creation with mass -Abstract – Inuit mask of walrus Iroquois – NE U.S. -the masks important to Native Americans -Red masks – used by the society of faces to personalize spirits with healing powers -Iroquois – northern new York – big presence in north eastern U.S. Chumash – California -Cali = rock art central – abundance/richness -Very abstract – Shaman (not terms of Chumash but referred to this way) perhaps created -Shamanistic visions – drugs are at times involved Pueblo and Navajo – Southwest -Pueblo Indians – descendents of the southwest’s most ancient inhabitants – cliff- dwellers -Lived in Adobe brick built “pueblos” -When the Spanish entered the southwest – saw groups in houses – called Pueblo, others who were nomadic Navajo and Atache -Navajo/Atachi would raid Pueblos

-Pueblo people used masked dance as a way to express art -Of the most sacred of all dances -Cachina – Ancestors/natural spirits who they worship to help them in the natural world -Cliff-dwellers – ancestors of these people -Cliff palace – part of the larger mesa system -Ceramics – extremely demanding medium -Sacred/practiced through to Pueblo
