VIS 21A 12/04/07 Tuesday, Week Ten Kimberly Rock art – -Wandjina paintings – Cloud dreaming spirits, ancestral spirits -Lived long ago in the mythical past they know as dreamtime -Belonged to the natural world -gave birth to species, became founders of the clans that are found today -Associated with monsoons/cyclones -People use these sites to reawaken power of ancestral spirits – not considered dead -Painted with white/red outlines, simple black circles for eyes -control arrival of new spirits (to children), controls monsoon, controls increase in animals for hunt -connected to totemic spirit -The spirit’s ability to survive, sense of belonging -Northwest coast -receives a lot of cyclonic activity, monsoon -Bark paintings – used in initiation ceremonies for young boys -They’re made from sheets of stringing bark or eucalyptus -Outer layer = rough, inner layer = smooth texture inner surface -Will work together – shows the collective spirit of the clan -men are the traditional artist for paintings – rock, ground, bark, now acrylic
