-“measuring stick” -The ruler which was applied to the books – if they passed they were in -“is the apocrypha canonical?” Documentary Hypothesis -Magnificently explains the questions of the bible -Repetitive -contradictions -Not so obvious if one was indoctrinated to the bible -2 versions of the creations of human beings -noah’s ark – # of animals on board, food -An ark is a box – cubit = roughly 18 inches -Sealed floating box -Noah = good man, everyone else was bad -One pair of animal each -7 Verse 7 = 7 pairs and one pairs of unclean -Sounds like flood lasted 150 weeks, or 370 -40 days and nights -First raven – nothing happened, no point -Dove – branch = showing, not coming back = found land -Hypothesis – Reason = Moses did not write the torah -Not one person wrote the first 5 verse -Various versions of the story but with significant differences which were put together at a later date than Moses -combined by editors -Even though contradicted each other, needed to be kept together -editor came at a time when they shouldn’t disturb the story -Exodus – who’s in charge? -Version favorable to Aaron and one for Moses -Balance the role of Aaron and Moses, turned out Moses favored -Creation – genesis – male/female created equally -Not created simultaneously equal -Male created, then plants, then woman as a fitting helper -No blessing, woman taken from his rib, created after review of animals -Second version – God named as “The lord” instead of “Elohim” P/J -P = Priest – unknown priest – Priestly source -God = title, Yahweh = name: never used God’s name -Elohim – regards God as a transcendent gigantic being -Wants readers to regard God’s power -Interested in dates, needs to show descent from the right person -J = Yahweh – German starts with J -Writer uses God’s personal name – Familiarity with God -shows that God is anthropomorphic -“walks in the garden”, appears to not know Adam and Eve, didn’t foresee humanity’s turnout -flooding -Documentary Hypothesis – Genesis 1 written by a priest, Genesis 2 by J, Noah’s ark = cut up and woven -takes Moses away from the bible Parable -“Story” with a religious point, whether it happened or not is irrelevant -If regarded like parables of Jesus, then whether or not it happened really doesn’t matter -Even if they didn’t happen, they can still be true in a spiritual way Story Pattern
