Chris Cheng MMW 2 Week 3 -Saul – God regrets putting him on the scene – anthropomorphic -David – 2 versions of the story of where David became Saul’s musician -Saul, David, Solomon – Which one was the greatest? -David spent a large amount of time campaigning -Solomon was living off the throne that David left -David centralized the country by conquering and finding Jerusalem (2 nd Samuel ch. 5) -Neutral ground -Unifies the land under a federal government -Pro-David/Anti-David stories – either documentary hypothesis or that David has really good/bad traits -Author may have been an eyewitness -David’s good side -Best friend is Jonathan – son of Saul -David does things contrary to own interest -Forgives son Absolom for revolting -God promises that his line of kings will be everlasting -David’s bad side -Interlude with Bathsheba breaks 3 laws – Covets her, commits adultery, murders her husband -Womanizer = temptation – Sign of respect for woman who is asked by king -20 Wives + a lot of concubines -Produced large amounts of children – Politiking about succession -Biblical contradictions -Who killed Saul?

-Saul requests armor bearer run him through, refused, commits suicide -Malakai tries to make david believe that he killed saul believing that there is a reward -2 nd Samuel 18 v. 14 – who killed absolom -Hung from a tree -Joab came by, and shot 3 darts to kill him Zion -Citadel, stronghold of Jerusalem -Good idea to build a city around a hill -David plans city around this stronghold -Later can mean Israel Solomon -David had many sons and was getting senile – problem for succession -typically succession rules are done very carefully -Had an older son named Amnon – but raped his half sister Tamar -Second son Kiliad who died -3 rd = Absolom -4 th son – was supposed to be king, was anointed, but David still changes it and assigns Solomon -Magnificent decatives – Great wealth, Diplomatic communication with everyone around -According to the bible he has 1000 wives -Diplomatic marriage – honorific -Was only 20 years old – no military experience -God asks him what he wants, Solomon asks for wisdom – also received long life Temple -Was not a job for David -Centralized religion and standardized the religion
