MMW 3 5.19.08 1) Islamic Law – issue that comes up recently i) -Goal is to have a community living according to God’s wants/wishes ii) -theoretically able to make perfect society iii) -Trying to lay down rules for believers iv) -4 levels of authority (1) 1 st is God’s words put into Koran (a) Koran Law in society (i) Theft, divorce, inheritance, adultery laws (ii) Clear directions given from God (2) What the prophet used the Koran for – tricky and subtle (a) Not what the prophet did – the way he was understood God (b)“Mode of the Koran” (c) Hadif – many of these (i) Example – “how to pray” – movements (ii) What prophet heard from God – 5 prayers (3) Prophet’s initiative (a) “Sunna” – what he personally did without looking at Koran (i) Can a slave inherit? 1. When this was written – does the slave’s property go with the slave’s trade? 2. Hadif states slave cannot own property (ii) Wine and gambling 1. In them is great sin – but the sin is greater than the prophet – shouldn’t drink or gamble if you’re good Muslim 2. Some countries allow one to drink, but others don’t
