Wenlong Wu Chem 141 Chapter 2 Notes 2.1 Element: consists of only one kind of atom. Each elemtn is unique ebecause the properties of its atoms are unique. Molecule: 2 atoms bonded chemically, act as an independent structural unit. Compound: composed of two or more different elements chemically bound together. The elements are present in fixed parts by mass. The compound’s properties are different from its component parts. Mixture: two or more substances that are physically intermingled. 2.2 The Observations that led to an atomic view of matter. Mass Conservation Law of mass conservation: the total mass of substances does not change during a chemical reaction. Definite Composition Law of definite or constant composition: no matter what its source, a particular compound is composed of the same elements in the same parts (fractions) by mass. Fraction by mass / percent by mass: part of the element divided by the total mass (more with calculations) Multiple Proportions Law of Multiple Proportions: if elements A and B react to form two different compounds,
