ChEE 201 Fall 2008 HW 2 1) There was a story in the Arizona Daily Star on Tuesday July 29th that reported Americans drove 9.6 billion fewer miles in May 2008 than in May 2007, which was a 3.7 percent decline over normal driving patterns. How many fewer miles is this per person per day in the country? Find a value for the average mileage that cars get in the U.S. and determine the total gallons of gasoline saved by driving less during this single month. Find a value of how many gallons of gasoline are typically obtained from one barrel of oil and determine the barrels of oil saved during this one month. Compare the barrels of oil saved to the barrels of oil imported into the U.S. and also to the expected available supply with ANWR. At the normal driving rates, how long would the ANWR fields supply the U.S. need for oil for driving? Solution: According to an online CIA source (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world- factbook/print/us.html), the population of the U.S. was estimated to be 303,824,646 in July 2008.

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
