AFPRL 100/01 Prof. C Wambu Unit 4- Race and Racist Stereotypes in Media A stereotype is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. Throughout the years, this term “stereotype” has become a verb and we now see many people “stereotyping” all around us. Stereotyping does not target a fixed group but instead can be applied to any group or category that has similar characteristics. Walter Lippmann first coined the term “stereotyping” in 1922; he defined it as, "the attempt to see all things freshly and in detail, rather than as types and generalities, is exhausting, and ... practically out of the question." In the article that I will be responding to “Race and Racist Stereotypes in Media,” the affects of stereotyping, who stereotypes the most, and the different types of stereotypes are all outlined.
