24/04/2008 21:18:00 Franklin Roosevelt Elected 4 times (the longest a president has ever been in office) During this period up to the 1930s the small interests were no longer able to balance. The New Deal o Created a system of government based on interest group balancing. o It made it government policy to protect specific interest groups, and limit the power of other groups. o Small interest groups were able to resume power. Now they wanted to set up an infrastructure that would seek to protect them. o 1932 – large interest groups lost power (they controlled government for 6 decades) lost ability to get things from government now they faced the government who actively opposed their power o The New Deal accomplished this by establishing institutions that permanently regulated the economy and attempted to protect the poor o Government now committed itself to many propositions: regulate bank system, regulate financial markets, subsidizing agricultural production, etc. o Changed people as well. Changed what they expected and demanded their government do. o Was a defining moment in history. WWII Was another defining moment in history Hitler had a grand vision for Germany and launched a series of invasions to his surrounding countries. (Invaded Austria, Poland, etc.) US invaded Europe. Landed in France on June 6,1944 (D-day)

o There for less than a year Germany collapsed in May 1945. On the eastern front is where WWII in Europe was fought. Russia developed a secret treaty to divide Poland with Hitler in August 1939. o Treaty meant nothing to Hitler. He invaded Soviet Union unprovoked. Germans made it to the suburbs of Moscow. 13.7% of the Russian population was killed. 10.7 million members of the military were dead 11.4 million Russian civilians were killed. o Was greater than the loss suffered by the Germans (lost just over 10% of their population; roughly 7 mil) US lost 416,800 personnel This war was a difficult and bloody campaign set off by an unprovoked attack set off in Japan. Russians, after a 2 year counterattack, reached Berlin and subdued Germany. o The government fell. The Germans surrendered. The war was over. Russians were coming from the east. Americans were coming from the west. They met up. o Many Americans wanted to keep going and oust the Russians while they were already fallen. 1 in 5 American men were in the military. Soviet union was a communist state; did not believe in private property. o Profits went to the state; and those profits were redistributed to workers according to their need. Capitalists vs. communists (soviet union) o Soviet union wanted a world revolution

Solidified their control of eastern Europe o Cold War - Another war broke out In Korea, Vietnam, South America, central America, Cuba struggled (known as the Cold war) between capitalist and communists o They are now armed with nuclear weapons. Mutually assured destruction
