What is psych? Psych is the systematic study of behavior and experience Psych is a word deriving from Greek: -psyche = “soul” or “mind” goals of psychologists - are to understand, explain, and predict behavior 3 major philosophical issues in psych - free will vs determinism - nature vs nurture - mind-brain problem 1. free will vs determinism - free will = behavior is caused by an individual’s independent decision-making - determinism = everything that happens has a cause or determinant in the observable world 2. nature vs nurture issue - how do differences in behavior relate to differences in heredity and environment? - influence of genes vs - aspects of the environment such as culture, expectations, and resources the issue shows up in virtually all psych 3. mind-brain problem how is experience related to the brain? Dualism – the mind is separate from the brain but somehow controls the b rain and thru it the rest of the body Monism – the mind is generated by and therefore is inseparable from the
