Terms Week One Norsemen/Vikings - (“North Men”) First Europeans. Traveled by ships  Left Scandinavia. Brutal people, attacked river villages. Worked the way across  the North Atlantic.  Leif Ericson-      Discovered Vinland (Land of vines)   Modern day Canada  Established a colony and it did not survive. Vinland-      Modern day Canada, Labrador, Land of Vines, raspberries, blueberries,  etc…  Christopher Columbus-      From Genoa, Italy. Contracted by King Ferdinand and  Queen Isabella of Spain. Said he would go a different way   through the back  door. Set out looking for trade in the Orient. Made 4 trips to the New World. First  he sailed from the Canary Islands  he  believed it to be the West Indies Hispaniola-        Columbus first landed in Hispaniola   celebrated first Christmas
