Jorge Ponce ENGL 130 Prof Seufert Honesty for men is not the same thing as honesty for women in Othello The issue of gender flows throughout Othello and at times helps to propel the plot for- ward. A typical sixteenth century Venetian woman is said to be chaste, silent, steadfast, and  obedient. This standard is held by most women in this play, and only challenged at certain  times. An honest women, at this in the context of this play, is a woman of virtue. Women should  be faithful to their husbands until the day of their death, no matter what their husband may or  may not do. They are to be dutiful, and follow them wherever they may lead. Typically, a hus- band is expected to treat his wife well and support her, but at least in this time period, if a man is unfaithful to his wife, most other men would see it as just another normal action. Of course it
