Deafness is a bilateral issue that extends much deeper than hearing vs hard of hearing. Primarily seen as an issue between two factions, Deaf and deaf cultures, the argument at hand carries a significant amount of weight both medically and ethically. Deaf culture is described as a set of beliefs, behaviors and values of deafness with the use of sign language (ASL, American Sign Language) as the primary means of communications. On the contrary, hard of hearing culture uses oral language as the main means of communication. The issue between the two groups arose in the 1980’s with the invention of the cochlear implant, a device that at best attempts to “cure” loss of hearing. The stance of each group is far different. Deaf culture believes they lie in a minority culture group in which life is viewed through a different scope. This unique experience is not seen as a disability unlike how the deaf culture views it.
