Lecture 02 Wilhelm Wundt – Addressed the question: why not use science to understand human behavior In 1879, established __ at University of Leipzig. Considered the “father of Psychology” Test Questions Most people were behaviorists, hard to get money if you were a structuralist Behaviorists dominated until the 60s until the shift of thinking involved a convergence of several independent trends. The cognitive revolution is a surge in wanting to study mental events. Result was the inclusion of cognitive processes in the definition of psychology. Humans are reluctant to change First Laboratory 1879 Wundt, 1890 William James publishes principles of psychology, 1892 G Stanley hall founds APA, 1904 Pavlov studies conditioning, 1905 Mary Caulkins elected first woman president of APA, 1913 Watson publishes call for behaviorism, 1933 Freud publishes influential New Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis,1951 Carl Rogers helps start humanistic movement, 1953 BF Skinner publishes Science and Human Behavior: radical behaviorism, 1968 Atkinson & __ Model of Memory, 1980s-1990s start developing techniques for imaging activity of brain.
