Racheal Stirling November 6, 2006 Nyerere Reading Response In “The Ujamaa Basis of African Socialism,” Nyerere speaks of how socialism can fix the corruption of capitalism upon African society. Nyerere is speaking from an African socialist’s point of view in 1962. Nyerere mentions how European colonialism is what brought capitalism to Africa, which essentially caused the deterioration of socialism. He states land should not be owned by one man, but rather by a community. The wealth of a tribe is dependent on the wealth of the families—if no one works hard, the families are poor, therefore the tribe is poor. Likewise, if the people of a community work hard, the families become wealthy, as does the tribe. Nyerere emphasizes how no man should “exploit” the abilities of another man. He claims every person in a community should be equal; no man should try to work to gain power over another.
