HOSPITALITY EXTRAORDINAIRE CASE STUDY Hospitality Extraordinaire Strategy and IT The most successful hospitality managers and leaders are able to see their properties or companies from a strategic perspective. They use this skill to differentiate themselves from their competition and create value for their customers and for the organization. Strategic management is a field of study that involves the process through which firms define their missions, visions, goals, and objectives, as well as craft and execute strategies at various levels of the firms’ hierarchies to create and sustain a competitive advantage (Okumus, Altinay, and Chathoth, 2010). H ospitality companies must embrace technology to compete against traditional competitors, as well as entrants that build their businesses with the latest technology. A strategic information management function should facilitate the business mission of its enterprise through managed information, managed processes, and managed Information Technology (IT). Broadly, current applications of computer technology in the tourism and hospitality industries can be seen in three main areas, operational, guest services and management information. The overall functionality of these applications is similar in different hospitality organizations even though the technology used to support them may vary. Core Technologies and Their Advantages Implementing technological advances promises the potential for greatly enhanced guest services to meet rising customer expectations, improved cost control, more effective marketing strategies and expanded opportunities for hotel companies and properties to achieve a competitive advantage.
