Free Will - Pool balls analogy: pool balls have an external force exerted; our cognition is internal - Given that we have a specific mental process which would always yield the same result given the same conditions,  does that imply free will does not exist? - Robot analogy? Determinism : Everything that happens is wholly determined by prior events – it is the inevitable result of prior events, laws. Hard Determinism : Determinism is true, and it entails that we never act freely. (Holbach) Argument: 1) Determinism is true (P) 2) So, I am never able to do otherwise than what I do (1) 3) I act freely just in case I do otherwise (P) C: I never act freely (2,3) Response? Deny #1? Response: Assume Determinism is false. “Simple Indeterminism” suggests no control from prior events in the universe

Unformatted text preview: which means that even the individual does not control himself, so free will would still does not exist. Quantum mechanics? Responses: 1) Indeterminism of Quantum mechanics doesnt quite affect us. 2) Quantum mechanics isnt entirely understood, so its difficult to inject Deny #3? Soft Determinist (Compatibilist) : Determinism exists, but that does not mean we do not have free will. Sophisticated Indeterminism : Determinism isnt quite true; dilemma is invalid because determinism being false does not mean that behavior is entirely random and erratic....
