The course has two broad goals: First, it provides students with basic understanding of how computer networks, local area networks, and the Internet work. Second, it develops students’ ability to apply the knowledge learned in this course to understand network architectures in an organization and to evaluate new telecommunications and network technologies. The course is broken down into 4 modules: Use and benefits of network – The purpose of this module is to encourage you to think about the tremendous benefits that networks have brought to our daily lives and the day-to-day functions of various business and organizations. We will look at some examples of network applications and their impacts. Data communications –Data communication or the exchange of data between two parties, is the fundamental building blocks of a network. We will discuss the key elements of a data communication model. Next, we will learn the binary digit system, a system that provides the basis for all computer operations, and contrast it with the decimal digit system that we use in everyday life. Finally, we will also discuss data codes (ASCII, EBCDIC, Unicode) that are commonly used to represent data.
