Private School Academic Achievement VS. Public School Academic Achievement Annie Hickerson EDUC 518 Dr. Mary Hallums Liberty University
Abstract People have always thought there has been a significant difference between public schooland private school. In general, the literature seems to indicate that social demographics, parenting participation, and the school environment all influence academic success of the students whether they be students in a public school or a private school. Standardized testing is a reality with which all educators must contend. Research found private school students took more academic math courses than public school students. These differences in course taking accounted for most of the public-private difference in achievement gains. In the debate over school reform, increasing emphasis is being placed on the need to develop new structures for the operation of our public schools. These new structures usually strive toward a goal of increased participation of all teachers, parents, and students. The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) released results showing that even if half or all public-school students choose to go to private schools, there would still be an educational crisis. There are problems in both public and private schools making a minimal difference between the two.
Purpose The purpose of this study is to compare public school education with private school education to determine which has a greater achievement rate of their students. This study will determine if there are significant factors that make public schools so different from private schools that it effects student’s success
Research Questions 1. What factors are used to determine academic success in both public schools and private schools? 2. Does environmental factors, such as parental involvement, community involvement, and/or a child’s physical home life, affect academic success? 3. Does standardized testing make a significant impact in defining success of a student?
Hypothesis My hypothesis is that there was a vastly large difference in the rates of achievement between the two schools. I based this on standardized testing and the outcome of scores and percentages that placed children on different levels of learning.
