English Module One DBA 1. Explain the difference between connotation and denotation. Give two words that are similar in denotation but different in connotation. - Connotation is the feeling we associate with a word, while denotation is the literal dictionary meaning of a word. Skinny and slender are two words that are similar in denotation but different in connotation as the word ‘skinny’ has a more negative connotation. 2. What are context clues and how are they important in reading? Provide an example of a time you used context clues to help you understand meaning. – Context clues is information that appears near a word or phrase that helps the reader interpret meaning. For example, in the lesson there was a passage from Romeo and Juliet and I used context clues to understand the meaning of some of the words. One word was contradict that I used context clues to learn that means “oppose”. 4. Explain how connotation/denotation help you understand tone in writing. Provide an example where connotation/denotation helped you to understand a piece of literature. – The connotation of words can help readers understand the author’s attitude towards the subject. The
