I. An overview of the topic Marriage is ritually and socially deemed as a legal union between two people. On the other hand, extramarital affair or adultery which is considered the main destruction to marriage occurs when a married person engages in sexual activity with someone other than his or her spouse that has always drawn numerous objections from the society in terms of legality and morality. According to a study released in USA, men have a higher likelihood to have extramarital affairs. Furthermore, a Gallup poll was conducted to determine how American people’s opinions on this issues in 2009. As a result, up to 92% Americans consent to the idea that infidelity is wrong-doing, making this the most objectionable and intolerable of any issues ever tested. In regard of happiness, Freedman (1978) claimed that a person who stands higher chances to achieve overall happiness is the one who engages in love, marriage and sex rather than whom having sex without marriage. Hence, it is a forgone conclusion that extramarital affairs are detrimental to household happiness, causing corruptions to the relationship between legal spouses. This paper statistically tests the demographic characteristics of the population such as gender, age, education, occupation, years of marriage, number of children, level of satisfaction with married life and religiousness have significant impact on the number of affairs people have. II. Literature Review As can be obviously seen, adultery concerns moral issues and each individuals has different perspectives towards moral and social standards. Hence, this subject attracts a numerously opposite schools of thoughts. Due to this, there are subjective approaches to data collecting procedure with a mere focus on psychological and behavioral viewpoints. As a consequence, inaccuracy and bias or errors arise in data. The low quality data acts as 3

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
