Day 1 Notes Mastering Chemistry Code: CHEM161F08S18TO29 Chapter 1 : The study of composition, structure, and properties of matter and changes that occur in matter. Matter : Anything that has mass and occupies space. (Page 3 for examples) Atoms: Smallest distinctive units in a sample of matter. Molecules : Larger units in which 2 or more atoms are joined together. Composition: Refers to types of atoms and relative proporitions of the different atoms in sample. Physical Properties : Characteristics displayed by a sample of matter without undergoing any change in its composition. Chemical Properties: Characteristic displayed by a sample of matter as it undergoes a change in composition. Table 1.1 on pg 4 for examples. Physical Change: Matter undergoes a change on macroscopic level but no change in composition. (Ex. Body of water) Chemical Change: Matter undergoes change in composition and/or structure of molecules. Chemical rxn Classifying Matter: 1.) Substance : Type of matter that has a definite or fixed composition that does not vary from one sample to another. 2.) Element: Substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical rxns.
